rinciples of fluid film lubrication and contact mechanics in mechanical elements. The course covers lubricant additive chemistry; derivation and simplification of the Reynolds equation for thrust and journal bearings; analysis of thermal and cavitation effects; numerical modeling using the Finite Difference Method (FDM) and Thermohydrodynamic (THD) simulations; analysis and design of hydrostatic, aerostatic, and hybrid bearings, including stiffness control via restrictors; Hertzian contact stress theory; and Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication (EHL) under high pressure, focusing on film thickness and flash temperature calculations to prevent surface failures. - prerequisites or co-requisites
- indicate whether a required, elective, or selected elective (as per Table 5-1) course in the program
Elective :
6. Specific goals for the course
- specific outcomes of instruction (e.g. The student will be able to explain the significance of current research about a particular topic.)
- explicitly indicate which of the student outcomes listed in Criterion 3 or any other outcomes are addressed by the course.
ABET Student Outcome (SO) Listed in Criterion 3 Performance indicator SO2 an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors. - PI-2.1 Produces a clear statement of needs in a design project (20%)
- PI-2.2 Identifies constraints on the design problem, and establishes requirements and desirability of solutions based on appropriate engineering practices or standards (30%)
- PI-2.3 Selects appropriate techniques and tools for a specific engineering task (20%)
