4. Text book, title, author, and year
- Jeremy Blum, Exploring Arduino : tools and techniques for engineering wizardry, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2020
5. Specific course information
- brief description of the content of the course (catalog description)
Fundamentals of computer programming; the program development and design process; problem-solving using programming to control computers, microcontrollers, motors, sensors, and actuators. - prerequisites or co-requisites
- indicate whether a required, elective, or selected elective (as per Table 5-1) course in the program
Required :
6. Specific goals for the course
- specific outcomes of instruction (e.g. The student will be able to explain the significance of current research about a particular topic.)
- CLO1 Students can develop a project based on the requirements of the users and translate them into an engineering design for an Arduino-based system. (PI21)
- CLO2 Students can propose, compare, and justify multiple solutions using their own design. On the other hand, students can evaluate AI-generated suggestions for alternatives with engineering reasoning, and considerations. (PI23)
- explicitly indicate which of the student outcomes listed in Criterion 3 or any other outcomes are addressed by the course.
ABET Student Outcome (SO) Listed in Criterion 3 Performance indicator SO2 an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors. - PI-2.1 Identify the statement of problem and needs in an engineering design, including consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
- PI-2.3 Generate multiple and alternative solutions and systematically evaluates engineered design options
7. Brief list of topics to be covered
| Week | Topic | Details | Activities |
|---|---|---|---|
| Week 1-2 | Introduction to Programming and Arduino | - Arduino platform overview - Basics of C/C++ (variables, control flow, functions) - Program structure and debugging - Introduction to AI tools as supportive learning aids | Programming in C++: Write simple codes related to variables, control flow, functions and loops. Introduce AI to write codes or diagnose problems during testing codes. Introduce Arduino platform and C++ code in Arduino. |
| Week 3 | Electronic Fundamentals | - Voltage, current, resistance - Basic circuit design for Arduino - AI-assisted circuit explanation (student-verified) | Use breadboards, resistors, LEDs, a potentiometer, batteries, multimeters and other electronic components with an Arduino board. |
| Week 4 | Sensors and Actuators | - Common sensors and signal types - Motor and servo control - Sensor selection with engineering judgment | |
| Week 5 | Communication Protocols | - Serial communication - I2C fundamentals - Bluetooth/Wi-Fi integration - AI-assisted troubleshooting (optional) | |
| Week 6 | Programming Techniques | - Timers and interrupts - State-based and event-driven programming - Introduction to TinyML (optional) | |
| Week 7 | Practical Applications & Product Design | - System integration and prototyping - Case studies of Arduino applications - AI used for documentation and ideation (non-substitutive) | |
| Week 8-11 | A proposals for a self-directed Arduino project | - Select an Arduino project of interest - Early design and preliminary implementation of an Arduino system - Prepare for a preliminary presentation | Design a project proposal for Arduino and present it to the class. The goal of this presentation is to identify a problem and find a solution through the use of Arduino. |
| Week 11-16 | A final Arduino project | - Design and implementation of an Arduino system - Testing, evaluation - Integration of programming, electronics, and responsible AI use | The students complete the proposed projects and present them in class. |
