5. Specific course information

  1. brief description of the content of the course (catalog description)
Utilize the concepts in aerospace engineering and related fields to design or produce an engineering project based on a given scope. Students must propose the topic at the beginning of the semester to demonstrate the project feasibility. Students must also formulate a project schedule, do background research and estimate the budget. Students will be evaluated on a progress presentation that demonstrates the understanding of design concepts, concept evaluations, current problems and possible solutions. Students must demonstrate the finalized design and its details, modified schedule and budget if any. In some cases, a prototype must be fabricated. Final evaluation is performed when the project is delivered. Focus is given to the project execution and its conclusion.

7. Brief list of topics to be covered
Week Topic Details Activities
1-3 -Define needs and goals of the project -Proposal preparation -Literature review, technology survey, gathering information -Create a proposal -Define the objective and scope of the project -Building a work plan -Students are required to research the given topic. For projects relevant to academic work, a literature or theoretical review is expected. For projects that involve recreating a new machine or designing machines or equipment for a specific purpose, a technology survey is required. -Students are requested to develop a project proposal and submit it to the project committee by the end of the 4th week.
4 -Proposal presentation -The students, as a team, will be assessed on the content of the proposal, paperwork, and presentation -Students give a presentation to the committee. -The presentation will be 12 minutes long. -The students are requested to answer some questions given by the committee based on the use of the literature review or technology survey.
5-9 -Engineering design, calculation, numerical study, simulation -preparing engineering data such as CAD, calculation and useful information to implement the design -The team is expected to search for proper design criteria and procedures that are suitable for their project. -The team must carry out either calculations, numerical studies, or simulations to use as some evidence to support that their design would provide the expected results. -The team must come out with adequate information that makes a selected design ready for manufacturing and assembly, such as CAD data, Bill of Materials, a purchase list, etc. -Students must work closely with supervisory team in order to carry out a design that reach the predefined goals. -Students must prepare adequate information that make a selected design ready for manufacturing and assembly
10 -Progress updated report -The students, as a team, will be assessed on the progression of the work. -Students, as a team, are expected to show a design criterion that is applied to their work, including some calculation and numerical study. -At least 70% of the design part of the project is complete. -Students submit the progress report of the project to the committee.
11-15 -Finalize the design -Production and assembly -Test -Final design of the project is presented, including all necessary information to support the production of the project -Components as part of the project are manufactured and will be ready for assembly. -Test procedure of the machine/equipment is studied and prepared. -Students show their final design and information that makes their project ready to put into production. -Students implement the design. Some relevant mechanical parts might be produced by the students themselves, purchased from vendors, or sent to makers for production. -The machine or equipment must be assembled and tested.
16-17 -Experiment and conclusion -Final report writing -The rest work of the project is to complete -Conduction of experiment -Dissertation writing -Students complete all of the remaining work of the project -Students conduct an experiment to prove that the selected design works as expected -Students consult with their supervisor on writing the dissertation
18 -Final presentation -Dissertation submission -The students, as a team, will be assessed on the completion of the work. All objectives and scopes that are stated at the beginning of the project will be considered -Students, as a team, are expected to give a presentation about the overall work that they have done, then focus on the final part of the work, such as experiment results and conclusion. -Students, as a team, prepare and submit the dissertation for assessment. -Students give the final presentation of the project to the committee. -The supervisory team assesses the completion of the project based on the objectives and scopes. -Supervisory team checks the content and writing quality of the dissertation.
